A new report from the (AACOM) highlights the major impact of osteopathic medical schools, including Midwestern University’s Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM) and Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine (AZCOM), on local economies and the national physician workforce.
The inaugural Osteopathic Medical Education Impact Report found that colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs) generate billions in economic output and support tens of thousands of jobs nationwide. COMs also play a vital role in addressing healthcare shortages, with graduates often practicing in primary care, rural areas, and medically underserved communities.
Key findings:
- COMs contribute $6.2 billion in economic output and $3.3 billion in national GDP
- Over 38,000 jobs supported, including 20,000 directly created
- 56% of graduates enter primary care specialties
- 12% of graduates practice in rural areas; 16% in Medically Underserved Areas
“A new physician from a COM represents healthier patients, stronger communities, and hope for the future of healthcare,” said AACOM President and CEO Robert A. Cain, D.O.
Midwestern University’s CCOM and AZCOM exemplify this impact by training physicians who serve where they are needed most while contributing significantly to their local communities.
